Blue Jays are much bigger than I thought they were....and dumb.
I have 2 bird feeders outside my office window. Why 2? Well, we started out with 1, but the ledge for the birds (or chipmunks) to perch on was pretty small. When cardinals or blue jays showed up, it was comical seeing them either gripping the support pole and reaching, or trying to hang on to the small ledge.
It was here that I noticed how big blue jays are. I thought they were essentially the same size as cardinals; but just with different coloration. Nope, a lot bigger.
And as for dumb, at least mostly. I got a basket feeder that hangs next to the first feeder (on a double shepherd's hook pole). The basket feeder is specifically designed for larger birds. Lots of room to either perch on the edge with only 3 chains that support the basket being in the way, or they can even just land in the basket and eat. There's a family of blue jays. They almost always still try to go for the original feeder, and then decide to try the basket eventually. Haven't learned to just go basket right away.
